High Desert Series Artist Statement

In Spring of 2023, I visited Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California located in the high desert region just east of Los Angeles.

The Joshua Tree Park is a true beauty of nature as well as geological wonder. It has boulders that have been shaped and moved by erosion over millions of years. The resulting colors, shapes, and variety of boulders and hills is one of the most beautiful sites of nature one can see.

And for me, it has inspired a five painting mixed media series that is my homage to the Joshua Tree Park.

To bring across the natural wonder and beauty of the place, I have incorporated the actual sand from the Joshua Tree Park, pumice rock, acrylic inks, and acrylic paint. All this inspiration is expressed through the lens of an abstract landscape approach. I hope you enjoy the boldness of color and shape that is the High Desert Series.

Artist Bio

Michael Schaffer is an American artist who began painting at the age of 30. His early works were heavily influenced by the European Expressionist Movement of the 1920’s through the 1950’s. He studied studio art at UCLA and these classes were instrumental in developing his use of bright colors and humanistic scenes. As his work became more abstract, the influences of Miro, Kandinsky and Pollock can be seen. A true mixed media artist, Schaffer employs an organic use of paint, ink, metal, earth, tile, pumice, sand and other media and materals to bring his visions to life. Schaffer’s work has been featured in solo and group shows in Paris, New York, Los Angeles and Sacramento. In 2020 and 2022 he won the Prix De L’Originalite’ award and took 1st place in painting respectively at Art Show Paris.
